Best Veg for small garden or plot

If you've only got a small area available for growing vegetables, you want to make the most of the space available.

For that reason, anything that is going to take up loads of space is not going to be a good choice i.e. courgette plants.  The same goes for plants that have a very long growing time, which will occupy the ground all season so not allowing successive sowings of other plants.

So what we're looking for are quick growing plants, which can be harvested after a few weeks and replaced by something else, and/or plants that do not take up too much space.

These plants are what I recommend so far, and I'll welcome any other suggestions.  Please follow the links to see what each plant/seedling looked like every week throughout it's growth.

Radishes - Supposedly ready in 3-4 weeks (though mine took a little longer), they do not need too much thinning so can be grown quite close together.
Beetroot (Alto F1 Hybrid variety) - A great space saver as they grow into a cylindrical shape and so grow down into the ground, as opposed to normal beetroot that grows in a ball shape.  As the Alto F1 variety is thinner (but longer) they can be spaced closer together than other beetroot varieties.  It is also apparently able to be harvested one week earlier than the boltardy variety.
Rocket - It germinates in 3 or 4 days, and a couple of weeks after that you are ready to start harvesting leaves
rocket seedlings just 5 days after planting
Little Gem Lettuce - A nice small lettuce variety, which are close to full size after 8 weeks.
Tom Thumb lettuce - Another small lettuce variety, which is also fairly quick to grow.  Mine took about 8 weeks to reach a pretty decent size.
